No substitute bet for late mayor Tik Aguinaldo, Comelec says

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) office in Kawit has put an end to speculations on who will replace the late Mayor Reynaldo “Tik” Aguinaldo as an independent vice mayoral bet for the May 13 mid-term elections.

Citing Section 33 of Comelec Resolution 10420, Kawit election officer Linda Estrella said no substitute shall be allowed for any independent candidate.

The resolution adds that only official candidates of a duly registered political party or coalition can substitute a candidate belonging to and nominated by the same party.

With Aguinaldo’s death due to cardiac arrest on March 24, the vice mayoral race in the town is down to two, between re-electionist vice mayoral bet Armando Bernal of the Nationalista Party and William Narvaez of the Nationalist People’s Coalition.

Meanwhile, incumbent and re-electionist Mayor Angelo Aguinaldo will face former mayor Hit Poblete (independent) and Eduardo Solis of Lakas-CMD.

Aguinaldo, 72, served as mayor from 2007 to 2016 and vice mayor from 1998 to 2007. He was laid to rest at The Heritage Park in Taguig City on Wednesday.

He is a grandson of the late Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, the first President of the Republic of the Philippines. (Dennis Abrina)
