President Rodrigo Duterte announced on Monday, August 21, the new chief of the Philippine Health Insurance Corp., (PhilHealth) Dante Gierran, a former director of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
“Pakilala ko lang sa inyo ‘yung bagong kuwan ko na PhilHealth, si Gierran. He was the retired director of the NBI. He is a lawyer and an accountant, so palagay ko, sabi ko sa kaniya, the next two years will be devoted to fight against corruption,” Duterte said in his meeting with the Inter-Agency Task Force members aired on Monday night.
“Maghanap kayo ng mapakulong natin para may maiwan tayo sa kulungan,” he further said.
The President ordered Gierran to reshuffle regional director of the state insurer.
“I want a reshuffle of the different regional offices within the next two or three days. That goes for the NBI, and the Philhealth,” Duterte stated.
“‘Yung lahat ng ano, regional vice president, tanggalin ninyo, whether performing at par or in parity with the other good ones. You know, if they are there for so long a time, the element of familiarity always enters the picture. ‘Yan ang mahirap diyan,” he went on.
Gierran took over retired Brig. Gen. Ricardo Morales who vacated his post amid corruption allegations in PhilHealth. Gierran worked as NBI director and retired earlier this year before being appointed as the new PhilHealth chief.
Meanwhile, PhilHealth Executive vice president and chief operating officer Arnel De Jesus replace Morales in an interim capacity.
However, De Jesus has also complications such as heart ailments and diabetes which made him absent during Senate and House hearings on the PhilHealth investigation.
