Martin “Teng” Naling is the only Caviteño contestant to officially become a part of the online talent show The Pop Stage.
The Pop Stage, hosted by Matteo Guidicelli, is an online talent program by Popeyes. It intends to celebrate Filipino talent and individuality even at trying times.
“I am hoping that we can bring joy and hope to everyone who are affected by the calamity that we’re all in now,” Unido Capital Inc.’s CFO Francis Reyes said in a digital press conference.
The winner of The Pop Stage will receive a grand Prize Php 1,000,000 and a one-year contract with Viva Artists Agency.
For his audition piece, the 23-year old writer performed a powerful Spoken Word Poetry that tackled the matchless servitutude of our frontliners.
“Kaya ko nilaban for audition yung piyesa na para sa mga frontliners, dahil bukod sa ito ‘yung kinakaharap natin ngayon, nagbakasali rin akong kung maipapasok ko ito, mas maraming makakarinig, mas maraming frontliners natin yung maabutan ko ng mensahe at naniniwala ako na through this art, through this message kaya nitong magbigay ng kahit katiting na inspirasyon at lakas para sa kanila na magpatuloy pa,” he said.

“Out of countless audition entries, I was luckily chosen to be part of The Pop Stage First 12 contenders. So far, ako lang ‘yun Spoken Word Artist na nakapasok. Hindi ko alam kung hanggang saang round ako aabot, pero I will maximize and do my best para maipakilala at maisabay ang sining ng pagtula sa big stage,” he said in a statement.
Naling is the only Spoken Word Poetry Artist to join the contest.
The Caviteño poet admits that he finds the show challenging because of the need to create a new piece in every round. “Kada rounds, need ko magsulat o magprepare ng bagong [komposisyon]. Challenging po siya for me,” he said during an interview.
Despite the hurdles, there is no stopping Naling in pursuing his mission to bring the art of Spoken Word in the spotlight.
“Naisipan kong sumali, kasi it’s my dream na hindi lang makilala bilang ako, kundi mas maiparinig pa yung tula ko sa wider platform. Maiangat yung bandera hindi lang ng spoken word sa Pilipinas, kundi pati ng mga artist na nagsisimula pa lang madiscover yung kani-kanilang potential sa paglikha,” he said.
“This is my one big fight para sa Spoken Word community, para sa mga Kabitenyo, at para sa sining,” he added.
