Three farmers were arrested by police for chopping an acacia tree in Barangay Pinagsanhan-B last Saturday, April 21.
The three illegal loggers were identified by police and their names were as follows: Donald Villamena Pasacsac, 38, of Barangay Liwayway, Mauban Quezon; John Paulo Salvacion Bello, of Barangay Caingin, Maragondon; and Arnel Antic Catanglao, 39, of Pinagsanhan-B. The men were caught in the act of cutting the acacia tree at 5:30 p.m. Saturday by a team headed by Inspector Federico Castro Lindo, local deputy police chief.
The local police team seized a 0-70 chainsaw and three cut logs from the arrested men. The chopped trees measured about 100 board feet and valued P3,000.
Previously, the issue of illegal logging has been appropriated in Maragondon and other municipalities in Cavite’s 7th District. Maragondon, a third class municipality, is an ecological tourism and forest-protected area in Cavite. It is the biggest municipality in the province in terms of land area.
The forest and other landscapes in the town, as well as other neighboring municipalities, are being watched by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Interior and Local Government (DILG).
