The Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) stated that it found no violations on part of the House Technology Industries (HTI) regarding the massive fire of its factory within Cavite Economic Zone last February 1.
According to reports, PEZA Chief Charito Plaza said that as far as HTI is concerned, there were no violations found. She added that facility inspection is regularly done twice a year and the last inspection conducted was on July 2016. Though formal investigation is yet to be concluded, it was said that HTI and HRD Singapore, its parent company, showed no indication of failure to comply with fire safety and occupational health and safety standards.
It is estimated that the total cost of damage including equipment and lost sales reached P 15 billion. The said fire injured 104 casualties, including an employee named Jerome Sismaet who reportedly died in the hospital due to severe burns he got from helping fellow workers escape the burning factory.
During PEZA and HTI meeting, it was assured that all expenses will be shouldered and financial assistance will be extended. There was also a plan that workers will be continuously paid, including those who are injured.
Plaza also appealed to social media users not to spread false information over the internet.
